What can I do?

We are open on Monday and Wednesday mornings.  We need help with packing bags, carrying bags for clients, unloading deliveries, moving products in the storeroom, and checking in and registering clients.  Also  there are projects in our office that need extra hands – seasonal projects, data entry, filing and similar. Additionally, from time to time we look for new volunteers to join our check in crew.  Experience is appreciated.  Sometimes we need help with a pick up of a food donation. If you have a car and can drive, that is helpful!

Interacting With Our Community  Please respect the privacy of clients/guests.  We ask that all guests are treated with dignity and compassion. No photos of our clients/guests  Refrain from discussing any personal details they may share with you  If you are ever unsure of a situation, check in with the nearest staff member. Please wear comfortable & appropriate clothing – you’ll be working with food products or carrying and moving food.

Can I complete my required community service hours at Somerton?

Yes! Community service is welcome here, whether school- or court-driven. You are responsible for keeping track of your service hours but we track it on the calendar also. Generally we recommend allowing at least 5-7 business days to receive your verification letter after completing your service. This will ensure we are able to meet your deadline.

Please note: for court-ordered service, you are required to submit documentation prior to beginning service that indicates the charge, the hours required, and the date by which you need them completed. We are not able to accept volunteers who have a record of any of the following offenses:

  • Act 153 Violations (list linked here: Disqualifying Offenses | Somerton Food Bank)
  • Robbery
  • Trespassing
  • Harassment
  • Breaking & Entering
  • Theft (including identity theft)
  • Any weapons-related offenses

What should I wear to volunteer?

As you will be either in food packing or food distribution, we encourage you to wear comfortable clothing that can get messy.
